Yay, I put together a new tutorial o/! This is another thing I get asked about a lot, DEM DRILL CURLS!! I originally got the inspiration for this method from a japanese cosplay blog, but all the instructions are in japanese so when I refer people to it there still tends to be a lot of confusion... =w=;; I also modified the method a bit to work for a parted ponytail wig + larger curls, so the process is a little bit different ~ also, this one is written in english. Yay!

Cheers to all you aspiring Mami / misc drill curled divas out there, I hope this helps!! Feel free to comment below or message me if you have further questions :D

Edit: I noticed the new PDF reader on DA is a little wonky ... I did update the fonts in the pdf so they look a little nicer than they did before, but this pdf looks best if you download it and read it in adobe reader/acrobat.

You cannot wash the wig after doing this right?

You probably can if you're careful ... xD;; The caulk pretty much wont move after it's dry, so as long as you don't jostle it around toooo too much it'll probably be fine. I'd just soak it and let it air dry. :3

Hiii! I'm new to wig styling and haven't had much experience with it and ended up messing one of my wigs up after a failed attempt of styling it. So I was wondering if this would be a challenge to beginners when it comes to styling the wig because I would rather just buy a Mami wig that's already pretty much finished and restyle it than completely screw up another one of my wigs. (also I did not mess it up trying to make Mami, it was actually for Len Kagamine XD)

This method might be a bit tricky if you've never worked with wigs before, but if you work carefully and really plan out, I think anyone can do it~! The trick with gluing wigs is that you have to work very slowly and clean up after yourself as you work so it doesn't turn into a complete disaster, lol ~

If you find a Mami wig that you like prestyled, there's nothing wrong with that either ~ this method is mainly for cosplayers who want to be able to have complete control of the way the curls look. I've seen lots of really pretty prestyled Mami wigs that have a more natural look. I just wanted that super cartoony looking spiral curl, personally!

Haha thanks for replying ^^ and yeah I loved the cartoony curls and I have this extra blonde wig lying around that's great quality and I was like "ehhh why not make it for Mami?" And since I killed my last blonde wig I got nervous and thought "oh no what if it happens again? D:" but what's the estimate amount of time this would take? I would like to do it all at once and not at different times so it all can be changed if something goes wrong (lol I doubt what I just typed made sense XD) I mean I have a year til my next con but the last one I went to wasn't planned out til the last minute and I want everything to be perfect~

I'd say you'd need a span of at least 2 days to do this just because you need to wait for the caulking/glue to dry between steps, which can take a few hours. I usually let it dry overnight just to be safe. I wait overnight for the caulk to dry on the stubs (Step 3), then glue one side of the curl and let that dry, then glue the other side. Then you'll want to let that dry completely before you position the curls. So that's a lot of waiting for glue to dry... xD;; If you do one step each in the morning and evening, it could be done in a couple days but longer would be ideal so you can take your time ~ ^^. But if you have a while before your next con hopefully that wouldn't be a problem =)
