Mami Tomoe - Madoka Magica by SparklePipsi Mami Tomoe - Madoka Magica by SparklePipsi
My revised Mami Tomoe cosplay I wore at Anime LA 2012 <3! I styled a new wig, and finally got around to making her rifles as well (out of craftfoam of course, my medium of choice xD)!

The scene where Mami summoned rifles from her skirt and ended the fight with a curtsy and a cup of tea pretty much sealed my eternal love for this character ~ so of course I HAD to get a photo in honor of that moment! Thanks to GaMeReVX for making my fangirl dream a reality ;D

hey, this has been nagging me for a while, but what colour are mami's socks? are they black, or some kind of plum?

There is much debate over this subject, haha ... xD;; But a color-drop test in photoshop reveals they are an understated mauve/plum color ~ :3

That's such a wonderful cosplay! I was wondering though, how did you make the corset? I've been looking for tutorials everywhere but I can't seem to find one.

The socks were a lucky find at the Target clearance section, I painted the stripes on myself using watered-down white fabric paint. :3

So I just did my Mami wig and I'm curious -- what (if anything) did you do to prevent their hair on the inside of the curls from buckling and bunching up? I was afraid mine was going to do that and lo and behold, it did. :P Short of gluing the hair on after making the curl, I can't think of any ways to stop this from happening.

Yeah, the hair on mine does kinda buckle and bunch a little bit, but not enough that it really bothered me... I kinda tried to bend the curl slightly as I glued to help the process, but I didn't put it into the super tight curl until it was dry and it did still buckle quite a bit ^^;; It upset me at first but then I realized it doesn't really show enough to worry about it... as long as the outside is smooth hopefully it'll be fine. :3

Alas, my attempt to make the insides look better made the whole thing worse, but I think this attempt will at least work for AWC. Then, new wig! Thanks for the fast reply -- it's good to know that at least I wasn't doing something wrong! I'll definitely make the curls somewhat curved before I glue down the hair next time.

Aw thanks <3! The majority of the rifle is made out of craftfoam, with a little bit of posterboard for support, all attached to a styrofoam base. The barrel is a long piece of PVC pipe. I posted an in-progress pic on my tumblr a while back with a little bit of an explanation to go along with it, which hopefully will help you visualize what the heck I'm talking about, haha >w< [link]

The nice thing about using the craftfoam/styrofoam is that it makes the rifles suuuuuper light weight and easy to pose with! The negative is that they're kinda on the fragile side ... so to help sturdy them up a bit, I painted the rifles with a couple layers of resin. It's probably not entirely necessary, but it does create a nice protective layer to keep the craftfoam from getting all dinged up, plus it gives them a nice plastic-y shine! I have another tumblr entry that I gave some tips on craftfoam resin method to, if you're interested! (I'm obviously a bit addicted to tumblr, haha xD) [link]

I'm using about the same process to make my rifles right now -- out of curiosity, how did you attach the PVC piping to the styrofoam/craft foam? Any special methods other than ALL THE GLUE?

Yeah it's pretty much just ALL THE GLUE... xD;; I primarily used hot glue!

I'm currently working on making a Mami Cosplay and I'm just stumped on what to do for the stockings. Did you make your buy yours?

Kinda both! I bought the purple over-the-knee socks at Target, and I used watered-down white fabric paint to emphasize the ribs on the socks. I got kinda lucky on the socks I found though... they were on clearance when I bought them, and I think they're out of stock now D: My backup plan was to buy socks from welovecolors.com and paint those, so that may be an option for you if you can't find actual ribbed socks in the right color! Good luck on your cosplay <3!
